How do driving distractions happen? 3 causes

On Behalf of | Mar 27, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Multitasking is someone’s ability to divide their attention and do more than one thing at the same time. For example, someone would be multitasking if they were talking on the phone as they make a meal. However, multitasking is also a leading cause of auto accidents.

Driving takes a lot of focus and multitasking can lead to distractions. Distracted driving happens when a driver does something that takes their attention away from driving, including looking away from the road or taking their hands off the steering wheel.

Here are a few tasks people do while driving that can lead to distractions:

1. A driver was using their phone

Phones are one of the biggest distractions in anyone’s life since they are made to draw users’ attention. Most people carry their phones with them in their car so they do not miss texts or calls. This can cause people to automatically answer calls and texts and calls while driving. Doing so can cause drivers to take their hands off the wheel and focus away from the road.

2. A driver was changing the radio or air-conditioning (AC)

Many people change their car radio to find the right station or AC to get warmer or cooler without questioning the dangers of doing so. Surprisingly, changing the radio and AC in a vehicle can lead to a distraction. While these machines are built into vehicles, they can cause a driver to lose their concentration on the road.

3. A driver was eating

Many people drive through fast food restaurants for meals daily. Having a hot meal in a vehicle can tempt people to snack while driving. There’s a lot of concentration needed to open a bag, pull out a meal and eat without spilling food. Eating and driving can lead to severe auto accidents.

If you are a victim of distracted driving, then you may need to learn your legal options as you seek compensation for your injuries, medical bills and losses.
